This week, the State Department announced a new beta test for an online passport renewal program, allowing travelers to complete the process virtually.

However, this option is only available for U.S. residents with passports issued between 2009 and 2015. Those needing to change their name or date of birth cannot renew online.

Travelers must also be able to upload their own photo.

It's important to note that once an online application is submitted, the current passport will be immediately canceled, so travelers with upcoming international trips should avoid applying at this time. The agency does not require the existing passport to be mailed in.

Renewing a passport online will cost $130, with credit card being the only accepted payment method.

“We appreciate your patience while we test our system and prepare for a full launch of the updated online passport renewal system,” the State Department shared on their website.

The processing time for routine service renewals online is 6-8 weeks, not including mailing time, so it may take slightly longer. The test program does not offer expedited or urgent travel options.

For urgent renewals, travelers are advised to make an appointment with a passport center. The State Department has also published a digital guide with videos explaining the process.

A crushed snapback led to an idea that captured an undiscovered corner in the travel industry. Autopilot is an American luxury luggage and accessories travel brand, combining luxury and utility to create a classic aesthetic.

Founders Christopher Tuning & Talib Graves-Manns took their idea and started a luggage line that speaks to sophistication and creativity. We got the chance to sit down with Christopher & Talib to further discuss their journey and learn more about their company Autopilot. Check out their interview below:

Tell us a bit about yourselves, Autopilot, and how it all began.

Christopher: My parents have worked in the airline industry since before I was born -- so I grew up traveling much more than the average person. This frequent travel and corresponding experiences and observations created, at a very young age, my interest in making innovations across the entire travel experience. 

The creation of Autopilot (formerly referred to as Life on Autopilot) began in Brooklyn, I was tired of getting my baseball hats crushed in transit so I came up with the idea for the Skycap, the first handcrafted baseball hat carrier. The creation of that Skycap morphed into creating other travel pieces which inturn morphed into creating this whole luggage and travel brand we call Autopilot.

Talib: I grew up within entrepreneurship, both my matriarchal and patriarchal sides of my family are entrepreneurs - we are four generations in. As A result of growing up within entrepreneurship I always knew that I was going to follow their lead and legacy. My father and mother owned a high-end women's apparel boutique in Rittenhouse Square Philadelphia (Richard B. Manns The Clothier) for a number of years, and that piqued my interest in “CPG” products and the brands that make them popular. 

Around 2008 or so, I was visiting Christopher in his apartment in Brooklyn and he showed me the prototype for the Skycap, and I immediately knew that he was onto something big. Over the course of the next few years or so we began to talk more about the vision and ultimately decided to join forces to bring Autopilot to life!

The truth is the process in manifesting/creating something from sketch pad to market-ready takes time, resources, and GRIT to make to pull-off - we are excited to be in the position we are now to have created products that have market demand, so much so that we have accomplished product orders with HBO and New Balance to-date. We love collaborations, and plan on doing many more.

What makes Autopilot’s products different from other brands? 

A couple things make us unique, first is that all of our products are derived from a culture embedded in Sports, Hip-Hip, and living shared experiences with people through travel. 

To date, we have created many firsts in the marketplace. (1) The skycap line is the first handcrafted baseball cap carrier and backpack on the market. (2) Our weekend backpack is the first travel backpack with a shoe compartment. (3) Our latest innovation, the Bruce, is the first carrier that holds bottles and cigars. 

These luggage innovation examples make us different from other brands primarily because our approach to research & design are deeply rooted in taking the voice of the customers and making real-time observations. We focus on how people travel for comfort, whether that travel is on an airplane or going to a friend's house for a kick-back.

What was the moment when you knew that this was what you were supposed to be doing?

Christopher: My special moment was when I was developing the Skycap and realized how much I loved the product itself. I was so passionate about perfecting the product, and watching people get satisfaction out of using the Skycap, I then knew that there was nothing else I wanted to do but make luggage pieces that blend utility with style that people loved and cherish.

There’s not much representation in the luxury travel product space from Black owners. What kinds of things have you dealt with being Black in this space? 

We’ve received a lot of support and love from not only our Black community but we’ve been widely accepted by all cultures.

We would be remiss if we weren’t honest, and make this work appear easier that it is - this work is hard work. Our team manages our supply chain, fulfillment, research/design, business development and marketing. Across general entrepreneurship the hard truth is that many black entrepreneurs are often under-funded, under-resourced, and more often than not overlooked. At Autopilot we have experienced these realities, but we are steadfast on charting our own course and figuring somethings out as we go.

What’s one thing you know now that you wish you knew when you decided to start Autopilot?

In its 5th year, Bermuda’s Carnival is young, but getting bigger every year. It’s the fastest growing Carnival in the world, and everyone’s beginning to take notice. But don’t worry, Bermuda’s Carnival is a perfect place to begin your Carnival journey as a newbie, as its not as intimidating as the ultimate experience in Trinidad & Tobago, but just as fun & inclusive as any other Carnival experience. Think of it as training camp for what will surely become your new addiction!

You’ll get your feet wet, literally & figuratively, as many of Bermuda’s fetes (or parties for the un-Carnivaled) are centered around the water. Whether its the Raft-Up (a Bermudian tradition), an all-out turn-up in the bay where yachts converge and everyone hits the open water in their floats to enjoy the gorgeous weather or Wetta, a soca party that includes water being sprayed on the crowd from the rooftops as people wine the day away.

PRO-TIP: Stop by the Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club and grab dinner and a cocktail at Marcus’, the restaurant owned by world-renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson.

There’s also your more upscale parties, like Glow & Pure, the weekend’s parties for wearing your flyest all-white outfit and catching performances from some of Soca’s biggest artists. 

J’ouvert, the all night party that never slows up until the sun the sun rises is the apex of Carnival. Take the hoses from Wetta, and add paint, powder, and everything else in an arts & crafts kit (and an open bar) to make the night (and eventually day) complete.

PRO-TIP: Wear clothing that you do not mind throwing away after the party’s done! Save time on getting paint & powder off of your body by putting coconut oil on your body before hitting J’ouvert. Also, don’t forget to cover your hair! You’ll thank yourself later. 

PRO-TIP: Need a snack after hitting one of the all-night fetes? Don’t leave Bermuda without getting one of their traditional fish sandwiches. Where can you find one of the best? At Seaside Grill on the North Side area of the island.

And as you try to figure out how you’re still awake after partying non-stop for days, you’ll put on your costume to play mas and hit de road. The Parade of Bands takes place in the heart of Hamilton. The city’s streets fill with thousands of partiers and onlookers, dancing along to the music blasting from each band’s massive float. Here’s where you’ll see some of the most incredible Carnival costumes and what feels like the entire island having a great time!

PRO-TIP: If you don’t think you’ll make the whole day marching on the parade route, the best time to join is for the Last Lap. Everyone is hype and you’ll see some surprise performances from the bands!

If you’re thinking about heading down to Bermuda for Carnival, start planning now! The week long party takes place in June, during Bermuda Heroes Weekend. You’ll want to keep up with all of the happenings, as bands generally announce their costumes in January (with fashion shows to boot), and spots sell out quickly. This is one event you definitely don’t want to wait until the last minute for.

If Carnival isn’t your thing, another great time to visit Bermuda is at the beginning of August, during Cup Match. Many of the same parties that happen during Carnival (ie, Raft-Up) also happen during this weekend and it’s one of the most popular weekends of the year on the island.

We visited the restaurant just a week after they were recertified as a Michelin Star restaurant (two stars) and it was easy to see why they’ve maintained such a status. Run by brothers Mario & Rafael Sandoval, the restaurant’s unique approach truly emphasized the experience in “dining experience.”

Here’s a little taste of what to expect:

When you arrive, you’re taken downstairs to the restaurant’s bar to commence your journey through the menu, starting with a signature drink and a palate cleansing Bloody Mary ice cream. Your prepped palate, along with your sparked curiosity will be led into the wine cellar for a savory take on macarons, paired perfectly with selections from the wine collection.

You’ll then venture into the champagne room for a flute of vintage Dom Perignon paired with a melt-in-your-mouth truffle.  It’s at this moment when you realize that your meal is truly a field trip throughout the restaurant, and you start to settle in for the rest of the experience.

Lucky for you, there’s an air of warmth and invitation throughout the restaurant, due to the kitchen’s open layout and bright demeanor. Although you’re guided through the experience you feel as though you could’ve approached a chef on your own to taste the next dish and ask questions about the ingredient choices.  You’ll have two more starters while in the kitchen, along with a sip of a local beer and then your tour of flavor finds its final destination at a table for the main set of courses (9 in total. Yes, 9! Come with an empty stomach.), where you’ll truly get an exploration of taste, technique, and overall thoughtfulness which each dish placed in front of you.  Head Chef Mario mixes the comfort of traditional Spanish flavors with an ingenuity and playfulness that makes for a full-on sensory experience.

You’ll be there for about 3 hours in total, so don’t think of it as simply a meal, it’s a taste excursion.  It would be wise to not make any plans after your reservation, as the menu is just as robust and you’ll likely want a moment to discuss the full experience you’ve taken in. 

After our meal, we took a visit back to the cocktail bar and got a chance to sit with the renowned Mario to chat about Coque and the menu and when we asked what he wanted patrons to leave with once they’ve experienced Coque, he replied that he wanted “first time visitors to experience all of the flavors of Spain, from the peninsulas to the mainland.” Mario’s favorite dish to make on the menu: the suckling pig.  It holds a special meaning for him, as it’s a traditional meal from his family, made by his grandfather. Mario and his brother, Rafael (who is the sommelier and manager for the restaurant) are third generation restauranteurs.  Food has been a member of the Sandoval family for quite some time. 

And his favorite on the menu to eat? He has four favorites, but you’ll have to ask him when you visit.
