He started with appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show back in 1998, which led to him getting his program—through the help of Oprah herself. His advice show, Dr. Phil, began airing in 2002. However, it was plagued with controversy early on because even though Phil McGraw holds a Ph. D. in clinical psychology, he didn’t have a license to practice. It remains a favorite among fans of reality-television.

Born on September 1, 1950, in Vinita, Oklahoma, Phil is now worth an estimated amount of $480 million. He also is the author of one of the bestselling books in 1999 entitled Life Strategie: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters. During the peak of his popularity, he made investments towards weight loss products that weren’t as successful as he hoped it might. However, it ended with a lawsuit and him pulling the supplements off the market just a year after launching them.
