ROXANNE SHANTÉ – EST. $500 THOUSAND

If you have seen the Netflix film Roxanne, Roxanne, then you are probably familiar with who Roxanne Shanté is. She is the first female rapper who opened up the rap scene for women. She rose to fame at 14 years old. At an early age, she was already part of the group Juice Crew and rapping around the neighborhood of Queensbridge. She was discovered by DJ Mr. Magic and record producer Marley Marl. She became an instant celebrity due to her freestyle rap single called Roxanne’s Revenge in response to the song Roxanne, Roxanne by U.T.F.O.

Her career peaked from the early ‘80s but then she took hiatus in the mid-’90s. Shanté was able to make a comeback in 2008, but she found it hard to gain her peak status as many young and new female artists are in the competition. As such, her career suffers as well as her credit score. Now, Shanté serves as a mentor to many upcoming artists and occasionally performs around the metro.
